Mary Halvorson is an American avant-garde jazz composer and guitarist from Brookline, Massachusetts, born in 1980. A MacArthur Fellowship recipient (2019) and three-time DownBeat International Critics Poll winner for Best Guitar, she has emerged as one of the most original and innovative voices in contemporary jazz, leading various ensembles and collaborating extensively with progressive musicians across jazz and experimental music.
Canis Major is a contemporary jazz quartet led by guitarist and MacArthur fellow Mary Halvorson, featuring Dave Adewumi on trumpet, Henry Fraser on bass, and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. The ensemble showcases Halvorson's distinctive approach to composed and improvised music, blending her innovative guitar work with fresh compositional structures.
