Miles Davis was arguably the most influential jazz musician of the post-World War II era, pioneering multiple stylistic developments including cool jazz, modal jazz, and jazz fusion over a career spanning nearly five decades. Born in Illinois in 1926, he began trumpet at age 13 and became a bandleader and composer whose innovations shaped modern jazz from the late 1940s until his death in 1991.
