David Murray is an American jazz saxophonist and composer born in 1955 in Oakland, California, who has established himself as one of jazz's most prolific and innovative musicians since arriving in New York in 1975. A founding member of the groundbreaking World Saxophone Quartet, Murray is known for his virtuosic playing on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, blending free jazz, post-bop, and gospel influences with a distinctive approach to improvisation and composition. He has recorded over 200 albums and collaborated with jazz luminaries including Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, and Randy Weston.
